Top 500 Songs Of 2009 - #20-#11
#10 Throw Me The Statue - "Hi-Fi Goon" from "Creaturesque" - Throw Me The Statue had a song on last year's countdown, but it didn't chart nearly as high as this catchy indie pop classic did.
#9 Regina Spektor - "Laughing With" from "Far" - "Laughing With" is this decade's "One Of Us", a sincere song about the nature of God.
#8 The Arctic Monkeys - "Crying Lightning" from "Humbug" - Combine one of the hippest indie rock bands of the day with excellent production from Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme and you have one of the coolest songs of the year.
#7 Pearl Jam - "Got Some" from "Backspacer" - It wasn't released as a single, but "Got Some" is the best and most intense song off of "Backspacer", one of Pearl Jam's best.
#6 The Thermals - "Now We Can See" from "Now We Can See" - The band isn't nearly as political as they were on their last album, but they've really taken great strides with their hooks. The chorus and hook on this song is the best in the band's catalog.
#5 Florence And The Machine - "Kiss With A Fist" from "Lungs" - The top returning song from the 2008 list, "Kiss With A Fist" is a classic and actually improved it's chart standing this year.
#4 The White Rabbits - "Percussion Gun" from "It's Frightening" - There are great lyrics throughout, but it's the way the lyrics work together with the bass and drum beat that makes this song great.
#3 Dinosaur Jr. - "I Want You To Know" from "Farm" - The veterans of the 90's alternative scene make a triumphant comeback with their brilliant "Farm" album, which is highlighted by this blues alt rock song.
#2 Band Of Skulls - "I Know What I Am" from "Baby Darling Doll Face Honey" - There wasn't a White Stripes album this year, but this song would have been one of their best if it was one of theirs.
#1 Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band - "Roosevelt Room" from "Outer South" - An outstanding protest album from one of the best songwriters of his generation with excellent, politically infused lyrics and one hell of a hook.

#20 Wilco - "Wilco (The Song)" from "Wilco (The Album)"
#19 The BPA - "Toe Jam" from "I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat" - At long last, the duet that everyone's been begging for: David Byrne and Dizzie Rascal!
#18 Wolfmother - "New Moon Rising" from "Cosmic Egg" - It's great to see that even the break-up of the original line-up couldn't keep Andrew Stockdale and the remaining members of Wolfmother from making some of the best metal of their generation.
#17 Them Crooked Vultures - "New Fang" from "Them Crooked Vultures"
#16 The Silversun Pickups - "Panic Switch" from "Swoon"
#15 The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Zero" from "It's Blitz!"
#14 The Temper Trap - "Sweet Disposition" from "Conditions" - aka "that song from (500) Days Of Summer".
#13 Dan Black - "Symphonies" from "Un" - There's an extensive back-story behind the creation of this song, but all I care about is that it's brilliant.
#12 The Dirty Projectors - "Stillness Is The Move" from "Bitte Orca" - The vocals are a little difficult to adjust to, but after you do, it's easy to acknowledge that this is one of the best indie pop songs of the year.
#11 Them Crooked Vultures - "Caligulove" from "Them Crooked Vultures" - Josh Homme provides the Queens-esque vocals while Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones provide the bombast.
#19 The BPA - "Toe Jam" from "I Think We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat" - At long last, the duet that everyone's been begging for: David Byrne and Dizzie Rascal!

#11 Them Crooked Vultures - "Caligulove" from "Them Crooked Vultures" - Josh Homme provides the Queens-esque vocals while Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones provide the bombast.

Top 500 Songs Of 2009 - #30-#21
#30 The Grouch And Eligh - "All In" from "SAY G&E!" - 2009's highest-charting hip hop song is a pop-friendly Outkast-ish song "All In", a song with a fantastic chorus and great verses.
#29 Them Crooked Vultures - "Spinning In Daffodils" from "Them Crooked Vultures" - Them Crooked Vultures retained many of the musical qualities of the super group's component parts and no song on the album is more Queens Of The Stone Age than this one.
#28 Phoenix - "Lisztomania" from "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix"
#27 Alice In Chains - "Check My Brain" from "Black Gives Way To Blue"
#26 Animal Collective - "My Girls" from "Merriweather Post Pavilion"
#25 Wilco - "You Never Know" from "Wilco (The Album)" - The opening line of the song: "Come on children, you're acting like children. Every generation thinks it's the end of the world." may be my favorite song lyric of 2009. At the very least, it's the best opening line.
#24 Pearl Jam - "Just Breathe" from "Backspacer" - Every Pearl Jam album has at least one great slow song to go along with all the great rock songs. This is the best slow song off of "Backspacer" and one of the album's biggest hits as well.
#23 Death Cab For Cutie - "Meet Me At The Equinox" from "Twilight: New Moon Soundtrack"
#22 Puscifer - "The Mission" from "C Is For" - The obligatory Maynard James Keenan song on the countdown, "The Mission" is a grinding metal song with fantastic vocals traded between MJK and a female vocalist.
#21 Passion Pit - "Moth's Wings" from "Manners" - A brilliant and sweeping indie pop song with an Arcade Fire worthy crescendo chorus.
#29 Them Crooked Vultures - "Spinning In Daffodils" from "Them Crooked Vultures" - Them Crooked Vultures retained many of the musical qualities of the super group's component parts and no song on the album is more Queens Of The Stone Age than this one.

Top 500 Songs Of 2009 - #40-#31
#40 The Sounds - "No One Sleeps When I'm Awake" from "Crossing The Rubicon"
#39 Green Day - "21st Century Breakdown" from "21st Century Breakdown"
#38 And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - "Bells Of Creation" from "The Century Of Self"
#37 Bell X1 - "The Great Defector" from "Blue Lights On The Runway" - Bell X1 bites the David Byrne sound as hard as anyone can without plainly ripping it off, but hey, anyone who can do Byrne this well has earned the poetic license.
#36 La Roux - "Bulletproof" from "La Roux" - I never dreamed a song this cool could become a hit on the pop charts, but it certainly did.
#35 Brand New - "Sink" from "Daisy" - Brand New has never impressed me with their music before "Daisy" came out, but now I think I need to give them a second look, because "Sink" (along with the two other Brand New songs on the countdown) is just about the best grunge music I've heard since Soundgarden broke up 13 years ago. They don't just dabble with the quiet-loud dynamic, they go from whisper to scream and back repeatedly on this awesome track.
#34 Phoenix - "1901" from "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" - This indie dance pop song was absolutely everywhere in 2009 and justifiably so, as it's one of the catchiest hooks since the first Franz Ferdinand album.
#33 Julian Casablancas - "11th Dimension" from "Phrazes For The Young" - As much as I'd like to see a new Strokes album pronto, when the members of the band are releasing music this good, I realize I can wait a little longer.
#32 Cage The Elephant - "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" from "Cage The Elephant" - There's sort of a dirty western sound to this song that sort of reinvents the concept of Everlast's "What It's Like" that works brilliantly with the song's story.
#31 Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band - "Slowly (Oh So Slowly)" from "Outer South"
