Top 500 Songs Of 2009 - #40-#31

#40 The Sounds - "No One Sleeps When I'm Awake" from "Crossing The Rubicon"

#39 Green Day - "21st Century Breakdown" from "21st Century Breakdown"

#38 And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead - "Bells Of Creation" from "The Century Of Self"

#37 Bell X1 - "The Great Defector" from "Blue Lights On The Runway" - Bell X1 bites the David Byrne sound as hard as anyone can without plainly ripping it off, but hey, anyone who can do Byrne this well has earned the poetic license.

#36 La Roux - "Bulletproof" from "La Roux" - I never dreamed a song this cool could become a hit on the pop charts, but it certainly did.

#35 Brand New - "Sink" from "Daisy" - Brand New has never impressed me with their music before "Daisy" came out, but now I think I need to give them a second look, because "Sink" (along with the two other Brand New songs on the countdown) is just about the best grunge music I've heard since Soundgarden broke up 13 years ago. They don't just dabble with the quiet-loud dynamic, they go from whisper to scream and back repeatedly on this awesome track.

#34 Phoenix - "1901" from "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" - This indie dance pop song was absolutely everywhere in 2009 and justifiably so, as it's one of the catchiest hooks since the first Franz Ferdinand album.

#33 Julian Casablancas - "11th Dimension" from "Phrazes For The Young" - As much as I'd like to see a new Strokes album pronto, when the members of the band are releasing music this good, I realize I can wait a little longer.

#32 Cage The Elephant - "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" from "Cage The Elephant" - There's sort of a dirty western sound to this song that sort of reinvents the concept of Everlast's "What It's Like" that works brilliantly with the song's story.

#31 Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band - "Slowly (Oh So Slowly)" from "Outer South"
